Light pollution is a topic of discussion at the international level

27 july 2023

From 12 to 13 July, the 10th meeting of the BRICS working group on semiconductor lighting was held. The event was held as part of the work of the Association International SSL Alliance* (ISA).

Alexander Karev, Ph.D., director of science at IGC Lighting Technologies, is a member of the Management Board of the Association. At the meeting, he presented two reports: "The market of lighting LEDs in the Russian Federation and government measures to stimulate import substitution" and "Methodology for assessing LED lamps by the level of light pollution." The topic of the second speech caused a wide resonance among the audience, since the growth rate of light pollution on our planet is 10% per year and this causes significant harm to human health and the biosphere as a whole. And the leaders in terms of the number of people living in the territories polluted by light are the BRICS countries.

The principle of "Lighting Technologies" is "light where it is needed". The company has its own rules and best practices, which we are ready to share, understanding the importance of solving this problem. A.Karev presented a methodology for assessing a lighting device in terms of light pollution, which is based on:

  • Evaluation of the light distribution of outdoor lighting fixtures in three critical zones - "backlight", "toplight" and "glare";
  • Assessment of the spectral composition of light by its negative effect on the biosphere.

The method of quantitative assessment of the components of light pollution of the OP allows you to determine the final indicator by which you can characterize any lighting device. Including this value in street lighting specifications is extremely important and will help minimize light pollution in the future. Today, all outdoor lighting fixtures  Lighting Technologies are subject to mandatory optimization for this indicator.

The proposals made during Alexander Karev's speech will be considered at the ISA Technical Committee for Standardization (TCS). And we will continue our fight against light pollution at all levels!
ISA is a non-profit international organization made up of regional alliances, associations/societies, leading companies and renowned universities in the field of Global Solid State Lighting (SSL). ISA currently has 75 members representing over 4,000 individuals and organizations, including major players such as Signify, Osram, Samsung, GE Lighting, Cree, Lighting Technologies, Veeco, AIXTRON, etc. The purpose of the ISA association is development of semiconductor lighting and its applications.
